SLA Encyclopedia

Spring 2012

You and your classmates will create an encyclopedia of Second Language Acquisition theories and language teaching methods (historical and current). Hopefully this encyclopedia will become a helpful resource for you to study for the master’s comprehensive exam and the ESOL NES exam in the future.

You will receive an email invitation to join the wiki I created for the SLA Encyclopedia (on Wikispaces). The direct link to the wiki is:

http://slaencyclopediasp12.wikispaces.com/

Follow the instructions on the email to become a member of the wiki.

You and your group will cooperate to do research and create an encyclopedia entry. You will find a lot of the information you need in your textbooks, but some of the topics will require outside research, especially on language teaching methods. Please use at least one article from the professional literature in addition to course readings. Make sure you use your own words. Cite your sources. Don’t simply copy and paste information from online sources!

Three people will be assigned to work on each topic. For each topic, make sure to address three areas:

--Theoretical underpinnings

--Important concepts and definitions

--Critiques and/or classroom applications

Within each group, you can divide tasks according to subtopics you feel should be included in your entry. Please post your entries to the encyclopedia by May 16. Then, read what your group has written and edit your entry, add any comments you feel are necessary, put finishing touches by the following week (May 23).

When you open the encyclopedia on Wikispaces, you will see a chart that represents the topics in our encyclopedia.

--Click on each of the links that you are responsible for (find your name below)

--When you are ready to post your entry, click on "edit."

--Add your text.

--When you finish typing, click "save" and your entry will be posted to our encyclopedia!
